- Safflower has a hard outer shell that requires a large bill, or persistence, to expose the kernel inside. Cardinals, Grosbeaks, and Chickadees are attracted to it.
- Starlings and Grackles struggle to open safflower seeds. Switch to safflower when these species periodically (usually spring and fall) dominate a feeder.
